How to Transfer TWS Settings from One User to Another

Overview: 

Trader Workstation (TWS) layout settings files are part of a number of sensitive details that have recently being protected by encrypting them.

In this article, we will explain how to export a copy of your current TWS layout settings and load it on a different TWS session. You can use this same procedure to export the layout settings of your Paper (Simulated) TWS and load them on your Live TWS.

 

Please follow the below steps to transfer your TWS layout settings from one user to another:

1. Log in to TWS with the user whose settings you would like to export

2. Navigate to the top menu and select 'File' followed by 'Settings' > 'Save Settings'

3. A pop-up carrying the text The Settings have been saved will flash on the screen to confirm the success of the operation

4. Navigate to the top menu and select Help followed by Troubleshooting > Diagnostics > TWS Layout/Settings

5. The tws.xml window will appear. Click Export Settings…

6. A pop up will show the location of the exported settings file. Do NOT click OK yet. Instead, click one of the links here below, according to your Operating System

 

Windows

7.a) Left click on the beginning of the folder path and hold and drag the mouse to select the entire path. Please make sure you only select the path without the initial quotation mark ('), the final forward slash (/) and the file name, as shown on the example image below. Now press CTRL+C to copy the selection

7.b) Click OK and then, on tws.xml window, click Close

7.c) Press WIN+R to open the 'Run' panel

7.d) Press CTRL+V (or do a right mouse click and select Paste) to paste the folder path that you have previously copied. Press Enter on your keyboard

7.e) The content of the folder will be shown. Click on the top menu View and make sure that the File name extensions checkbox is active

7.f)  Right click on the file tws.xml.txt and rename it, using a filename of your choice and the .xml file extension (e.g. you can rename the file to: settings.xml)

7.g) If you are prompted to confirm the file extension change, click Yes

7.h) Proceed to Step 8) for further instructions

 

macOS

7.a) Left click on the beginning of the folder path and hold and drag the mouse to select the entire path. 7.b) Click OK and then, on tws.xml window, click Close

7.c) Press Command+Shift+G on your keyboard to open the Go to Folder panel

7.d) Press Command+V  (or do a right mouse click and select Paste) to paste the folder path that you have previously copied. Press Enter on your keyboard

7.e) The content of the folder will be shown. Rename the file tws.xml.txt using a filename of your choice and the .xml file extension (e.g. you can rename the file to: settings.xml)

7.f) If you are prompted to confirm the file extension change, click Use .xml

8. Close your TWS and launch it again (or open an additional TWS session). Log in with the user which should import the layout settings

9. Click the top menu File followed by Settings > Layout/Settings Recovery

10. Select Custom and click Ok

11. Put the cursor in the File Name field and press CTRL+V to paste the folder path you had previously copied at point 7.a). Click  Open

12. Select the settings file you previously renamed (e.g. settings.xml) and click Open

13. Click Open without reporting problem

14. Your TWS will automatically restart, loading the imported layout settings
